CREATING A DEMENTIA FREINDLY COMMUNITY in Enumclaw and on the Plateau

Momentia teaches us that Dementia Friendly Communities recognize and organize in ways that affirm

  • There is life beyond a diagnosis – a life that includes the possibility for joy in the midst of challenge.
  • Persons living with dementia remain a vital part of the community and deserve the opportunity to stay connected and engaged.
  • Persons living with dementia are the experts on their own experience and their valuable perspectives must be recognized.
  • By working together, we can transform what it means to live with dementia in the community, changing the story from one of despair, to one of hope.

As we learn how we at Calvary can contribute to being dementia friendly we are delighted to partner with Elderwise.org and UW memory Hub to highlight, celebrate and learn form the art of those who are living with dementia. Here are some of the ways we are listening to thowe with dementia through their art. We invite you to come explore with us

Art in our Media

With permission from Elderwise and UW Memory Hub Frame of Mind we are featuring digital pieces in our communications and during our worship services. These pieces allow participants to reflect and deepen their engagement with the Spirit of Love that exists in all of us. Pieces used and biography of the artists can be found below.

Memory Cafes

We will hold a series of Pop-Up Memory Cafes throughout 2026. Memory Cafes are spaces in which people living with changes in their memory or thinking, and the people who care about them – family, friends, or professional caregivers - can gather to socialize. Memory Cafes focus on people, not medical conditions and so time is spent just being present with each other.

This first memory cafe we will take place in the space where we are hosting an art exhibit of paintings by people with dementia (see below). There will be opportunity to engage the art and a simple art activity will be available for those who want to engage. We will have light refreshments and lots of time and space to connect and be together . There is no cost and all are welcome.

Wilderness: An Exhibit

We are delighted to partner with Elderwise and Rainier Respite to bring an exhibit of paintings by artists with Dementia. This exhibit will be in place between Feb 18th and April 5th and can be viewed between 11am and 1pm on Sundays.

It will also be featured as part of our Pop-Up memory Cafe (details above)
